by Scott YanowThe first of two albums by the trio of drummer/percussionist Barry Altschul, trombonist Ray Anderson and bassist Mark Helias is taken from their appearance at the Moers International New Jazz Festival. The four lengthy originals (one apiece by Anderson and Helias, with two numbers by Altschul) have their moments, but there are also meandering sections where one can easily doze off. Most of the sparks are provided by the virtuosic and eccentric Anderson; Helias has a strong bowed spot on the episodic "Martin's Stew," which is easily the strongest performance of the four.
