Jake Blount, one of the few remaining Black and Native musicians in the modern Appalachian Old-Time scene, joins forces with acclaimed fiddler Tatiana Hargreaves to pay tribute to his predecessors through eight stripped-down, intimate duets. The two award-winning musicians are equally comfortable with haunting, elegant instrumentals like "Wiley Lawes'," driving songs like "John Henry," and jocular, groovy pieces like "The Rabbit." That versatility aids them in painting a vibrant (if inevitably abbreviated) picture of the musical culture that once suffused America's communities of color, and through Blount's work may return to them again. His original piece, "Running Home to Doris," written in honor of his grandmother, serves as a subtle, but firm reminder that these musical traditions are alive and well, and that they may one day be fully reclaimed.
