Sometimes the simple act of trying to make music together can get complicated. Quickly. To begin with, the Hardanger fiddle is tuned higher than the "normal" fiddle, making it impossible to simply play the same tunes together in unison; so what to do? Furthermore, much of Old Time and Hardanger fiddle music is double-stop music—two notes at a time in both instruments, quadrupling the challenge.
