Independent Rochester, New York producer and singer-songwriter Sean Smith started creating the album in the summer of 2007 under the alias "Sean Goes Pop!". After a huge response from fans with the release of "Dirt" featuring Morgan Parham, Smith decided to invite new vocalists to the project (Jacque Babb and Andrew Martin). After creating a large following, Smith changed the name of the project to "Idioteque", named respectively after the groundbreaking Radiohead song of the same name that inspired the conception of the project. Guest background vocalists include Smith's close friends Cara Recinella and Brittany Rainess. Each vocal track was recorded by the respective vocalist and sent via the internet to Smith, who would create the instrumental track around the vocals.
