My favourite music has always made me Move! This record is strongly influenced by hip-hop; music to which I grew up listening. Hip-hop and jazz are similar in many ways. Both are a form of aural collage art; borrowing from different styles and blending them into a unique, entirely new language. Both center on spontaneous composition and both revisit and redefine music from years past. And both styles make you Move! Dancers at the Savoy Ballroom used to “sit-in” when bands rehearsed. If a tempo wasn’t right for dancing the band leaders got an earful! Chick Webb, Benny Goodman, and Jimmy Lunceford wrote and performed music specifically with dancing in mind. Indeed, at the height of the swing era, music and dance were inexorably intertwined. The same holds true for hip-hop.
