Leopold Mozart writes in his "A Treatise on the Fundamental Principles of Violin Playing"(Gründliche Violinschule) chapter 4, paragraphe 17 : "Wenn 3 ungleiche Noten in einem Viertheile zusammen kommen, deren eine langsam und zwo geschwindere sind; so werden die zwo geschwindern in einem Bogenstriche zusammen geschleifet." That means clearly that when you see an eighth note followed by two sixteenth notes, the two sixteenth notes should be slurred. That is the case in all 3 Fugas of Bach. In this way you can play much more fluently and phrased AND it becomes a lot easier to play. I think this recording is the first to make good use of this rule.
