In my house everyone played or had studied a musical instrument for some period of time no matter how little time it was. Like many young African American musician’s Tim had most his heart and sold training rooted in the family’s local church, a Church of God in Christ (C.O.G.I.C) institution. At the COGIC church loud spiritual music was very important. He played his tenor saxophone as loud as he could, trying to hear himself against a full blown “Hammond B3 with the loadest Leslie Speakers,” the standard accompanying instrument besides the piano.
